Wear Orange to End Gun Violence – June 2-4

The HCPA is joining other Howard County organizations by participate in the national Wear Orange to
End Gun Violence campaign. The color orange honors the more than 120 lives cut short and the
hundreds more wounded by gun violence every day in our country.
It’s simple, wear something orange during your sessions June 3-4, t-shirt, shorts, hat, sweat bands,
socks. HCPA will post signs and serve some healthy snacks at the Saturday and Sunday sessions.
Please join the local, state and national forces to fight for a future free from gun violence.

HCPA Spring Mixed Doubles Results

Thirty-six players, 8 volunteers, 6 referees, and a single tournament director came together for the HCPA spring mixed doubles tournament on March 27 at Glenwood Community Center. Eighteen teams competed in two phases. In the first half, 3 pools of 6 teams competed in round robin play. The winner of each pool along with a “best of the rest” wildcard then clashed paddles in a 4-team playoff.

When all the blood was spilled (and then mopped up to clear the courts for a group of extremely large and rambunctious teenagers waiting to play basketball), those warriors remaining atop the sanguinary mountain comprised:
1: Jim Fessler and Khai Wongsabute
2: Thomas Salley and Sandy Whaler
3: Troy Osten and Betty Lee
4: Sharon Tennyson and Doug Smith

From Sonny Tannan:
Pickleball enthusiasts-
I hope everyone is doing well! Spring feels like it wants to come around, but the cooler weather is still here for a while longer.
Luckily, I have a few clinics that will once again be indoors at Dill Dinkers (9179 Red Branch Rd, Columbia, MD 21045). Please feel free to see the attached and remember, these fill quickly, so don't wait to let me know if you'd like to register!

I may also have a slot for group lessons available (from 1 - 2p on Thursday), just let me know if you are interested and I'll check for court availability and my schedule.

See you on the courts soon!

Discounted Clinic offered at JOOLA Tournament on Friday, October 14th

We have made arrangements to host a Pickleball clinic on Friday, October 14, 2022, at a discount to HCPA members, and we will be opening up registration to those registered for the tournament. This is a great way to tune up for your Saturday and Sunday matches.

HCPA members are receiving notification first, followed by tournament registrants, and then the public. The first 32 to sign-up will lock in their spot. If enough people are interested, we may have another JOOLA Pro join the clinic. There will be an 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

The fee is $60 per person/per session. On a comparable cost basis, this is less than the event Sonny is holding 10 days later. Please see the flyer for more information and to register.

There will be two clinics:
4:00 pm to 5:30 pm – Advanced Beginner (3.0-3.5)
5:30 pm to 7:00 pm – Intermediate (3.5-4.0)

You can contact Sonny Tannan at pickleball@sonnytannan.com or (443) 473-9259

From Bob Sans:

Special Olympics Over the Edge
As you may or not be aware, every year the SOHC has a charity event called Over The Edge to raise
funds for each sport.  Over The Edge requires a person to rappel down the side of a
building in Columbia.  It is scheduled for September 17, 2022.
This year, Maria Docal, Pickleball Coordinator and HCPA member has been selected (literally roped in) to
represent our Pickleball program in rappelling down a 12 story building.
You may ask why I am not doing this.  Since many of you know me I would live in mortal fear of someone
cutting the ropes from above or a group throwing tomatoes from below as a means of retribution.
I am writing as Maria is going to need sponsors for this event.  I am asking you as a fellow HCPA
member and Pickleball player to donate to this cause as it will surely reflect on our program and will keep
me off the top of this building for the foreseeable future.  To donate please click on the link below and it
will take you to the site needed to make a donation specifically to Maria.
https://support.somd.org/Maria
I thank you all and also am thanking Maria for going through with this.
Best always-
Bob Sans
